Art in the margins has met with more appreciation and respect in the last few years. Many people find that artists in this genre are more original and show more intensity.

The talented creator often does not need lengthy education or years of experimentation in order to create works that touch us directly. Both figurative and abstract works jump out at us by the manner in which the form and the often intense colours are used.

There are many names for this type of art; terms created to lend an esthetic quality:

Naive Art - association with children's drawings
Art Brut - the use of raw and untainted form

• The use of the term Outsider Art permits a broader framework describing the work of physically or mentally challenged artists, homeless artists as well as Street Art.
